Cooling efficiency for your air conditioner is indicated by its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. This rating tells you how efficiently your unit uses electricity. In general, the higher the SEER rating, the less electricity your unit will use to cool your home.
The typical SEER rating of air conditioners made before 1992 is about 6.0. In 1992, the government established the minimum cooling efficiency standard for units installed in new homes at 10.0 SEER. In 2006 the government established the new minimum rating at 13.0 SEER. High-efficiency units have a SEER of at least 14.0; the maximum available is about 23 SEER.

Follow these steps when choosing your air conditioning repair or installation contractor. Inquire if your a/c contractor is EPA certified (THAT IS THE LAW). If your contractor is not EPA certified it is possible that they can cause more harm to your a/c system which will cost you more money in the future. Make sure your HVAC contractor is properly licensed and insured. Get upfront pricing from your contractor. Repair prices may vary.

Air conditioner tips to allow for your cooling system to operate properly:
Did you know you can extract heat from chilly outside air and use it to heat your house?
For climates with moderate heating and cooling needs, heat pumps offer an energy-efficient alternative to furnaces and air conditioners. Heat pumps use electricity and Freon to move heat from a cool space into a warm space, making the cool space cooler and the warm space warmer. During the heating season, heat pumps move heat from the cool outdoors into your warm house; during the cooling season, heat pumps move heat from your cool house into the warm outdoors. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume.
The most common type of heat pump is the air-source heat pump, which transfers heat between your house and the outside air. High-efficiency heat pumps also dehumidify better than standard central air conditioners, resulting in less energy usage and more cooling comfort in summer months. However, the efficiency of most air-source heat pumps as a heat source drops dramatically at low temperatures, generally making them unsuitable for cold climates.
